Augi’s furever home
We adopted Augi 6 weeks ago, so we’ve gotten to know him pretty well, as we realized he is not a labrador, and that he is going to be quite big, we’ve changed our approach to one of fostering. He is sweet, affectionate, funny, attentive, and learns quickly and has a remarkably calm and thoughtful nature for his age.. He’s a bit of an old soul. He settles well but has plenty of goofy puppy energy. He is smart, eager to learn, wonderful with people (doesn’t jump much on people), absolutely loves other dogs (he does jump on dogs after his very respectful puppy introduction). We have tried to instill a foundation of some solid skills and habits. The basics, SIT, WAIT (same as stay), WALK WITH ME, OFF, or FEET OFF, GENTLE, OK. We are working on walking on leash, it’s a long process, but so far, with each walk he is pulling less and less.
We’re legit in love with him so we’re going to be super-picky about finding the right home for him.
We’ve watched how he responds to people and other dogs, learned his rhythms and routines, seen what helps him thrive, and spent lots of fun hours working with him on training, socialization, kennel skills, manners, and everyday life.
He has also been to the vet multiple times and gets STAR STAR PLUS for his ease and friendliness at the vet. He is up to date on his vaccinations.
What kind of home is he looking for?
One of the most important things to know about Augi is that he’s a companion-oriented dog (it’s the Pitt bull and the Husky) that will thrive living in a home where someone is around much of the time. A great fit might be someone who works from home, or who can bring him along to work, or a couple whose schedules allow them to trade off time at home. He needs exercise daily. He is a puppy, so he can only walk max 40 minutes a day until he gets older and his bones get stronger. He loves and need a fenced backyard. He spends time just watching the birds, squirrels, ants, the traffic, sniffing the air.

He loves being near us and being part of what is going on, but once he has had his exercise and playtime, he’s also a star at settling down and resting.
How is he with other dogs?
He LOVES dogs.
Augi currently gets about a 40-minute walk each day at Crystal Lake Park, where he regularly sees and meets other dogs. He usually approaches another dog with a respectful puppy crouch. Once he realizes there may be a chance to play, he gets excited, bouncy, and eager to get closer.
He also enjoys sitting back and watching the bigger dogs play.
We’ve enjoyed giving him positive experiences with other dogs, and we would want his new family to continue building on that while helping him practice calm greetings and good manners.
He has had two playdates and one walk with a friends dog. He responded appropriately each time, he played well. Just like any puppy, he would benefit from play with an experienced, calm dog.
How is he with people?
Augi loves people, a very calm greeter of strangers, he does not bark, and is affectionate with his people and likes attention from strangers. He very rarely jumps up, although every once in a while his puppy enthusiasm gets the better of him. We had a big dinner party and he greeted everyone calmly, no barking, no jumping, no begging, and he was happy in his kennel with a chew during dinner, and then spending some time with our family and playing in the yard.
What is his activity level?
He has a really nice balance of active puppy doings and downtime. Right now, he gets a training session in the morning, then breakfast, then about a 40-minute walk. After that, he generally sleeps for much of the afternoon. He usually has another playful period in the evening with backyard zoomies, fetch, and general puppy silliness, then it’s bed time. He goes to bed early, around 8:30-9.
Is he kennel trained?
Yes, he loves his kennel. We’ve put a lot of focus into making his kennel a positive place for him. His daytime kennel is in the main part of the house where he can see what is going on, and he often chooses to hang out in it on his own to chew on a treat or take a nap. At night, he sleeps in a second kennel in our bedroom with the kennel door open.
Is he house-trained?
Yes, Augi is house trained. It’s been weeks since an accident in the house, and even then, I can count the accidents on one hand. He very politely pees and poops along the back fence. He has woken us up during the night twice when he needs to go outside. But when he’s in for the night, he can go for an 8 hour sleep. Like any young puppy, he will still need his routine reinforced.
Can he be left alone?
This is still something he is learning. Because I work from home, he hasn’t had much experience being left for long periods. So far, he has generally only been alone for about 20-30 minutes at a time. We would want his new family to continue building that skill slowly and thoughtfully. The fact that he already feels secure in his kennel gives him a very good foundation for learning to be comfortable alone for longer stretches. He is great in the car alone for 20-30 minutes also. He is great in the car in general.
How is he with children?
He has not had enough experience with children for us to confidently say how he would do living with them. He is still very young and very teachable, so we would consider a home with children if it felt like the right fit. We would want the family to be committed to thoughtful introductions, supervision, and helping both Augi and the children learn good boundaries with one another.
How is he with cats?
He also hasn’t had any experience with cats, so we don't know how he would do living with one. We would consider a home with cats if the family was prepared to do slow, careful introductions and supervise closely while everyone gets acquainted.
Augi is a star puppy, but he’s still only 4 going on 5 months old and will soon be entering adolescence.
We’ve invested many hours in his training, and he has responded beautifully. He’s extremely bright, learns quickly, and genuinely seems to enjoy learning. We are looking for someone who will continue:
Be loving and kind
Consistent training
Positive socialization and good manners around people and dogs
Gradually building his comfort with being alone
Daily exercise and play
Plenty of companionship and involvement in family life
What breed is he?
Safe Haven originally described Augi as a yellow Lab mix, which makes sense when you look at him. We did a DNA test and learned that he is approximately:
33% American Pit Bull Terrier
18% Husky
17% Shepherd
He also has smaller percentages of several other breeds, including about 5% Labrador Retriever. Around here, we have been calling him our little "PitShepSky."
A little more about finding his home
We love Augi to bits, and we’re super invested in helping him land in the perfect spot. We are looking for the person, couple, or family whose life is genuinely a good match for this little guy. We’ll want to know about your household, your daily schedule, your experience with dogs, any other pets, your yard, and what Augi's day-to-day life would look like with you.
The great thing is that after a month of living with him, loving him, training him, and paying close attention to who he is, we can tell you a great deal about the dog you would be welcoming into your life.
And he really is a special one.
We want to find someone who will cherish him and continue giving him the care, companionship, guidance, and amazing life he deserves.
