The Reason We Need to Rehome

My husband has had four back surgeries, a shoulder reconstruction, and both elbow and neck surgeries. I am hale and hearty, but I am approaching my 70s. We adopted Augi  10 weeks ago, and thought we were adopting a mid-sized labrador mix. Since then we found that not only was he was under nourished, he also had tape worms, clostridia and giardia, twice, poor guy. These most likely stunted his growth and the vet said now he will start really putting on weight. So he is going to be a bigger adult than we really think we can handle at this time in our life.

We are looking for an active, kind, home for young Augi. He is truly an amazing puppy, If you’re interested, we’d like to meet and we can talk further about his star qualities. We will be sad to let him go, but we will be happy if we find him a really great home.

Age: about 6 months old

Current weight: 45 lbs.
Expected adult weight: 75+/- lbs. 

Augi's personality

• Calm and settled for a puppy, but still gets the zoomies and has some sass!

• Thoughtful and observant

• Super smart  learner who’s eager to please and food motivated

• Affectionate and sweet, melts into a puddle when you pet his ears

• Loves dogs and people

• Handsome, funny, goofy and LOVES to Play

• He loves green grass, ice cubes and squeeky toys!!

• Rides in the car like a pro!

• He has some crazy ears and an extra long tail!

• He has already been to the coffee shop a few times and has been a very good boy.

He loves being near us and being part of what is going on, but once he has had his exercise and playtime, he’s also great at settling down and napping or happily chewing on his toys or chewies.

Augi LOVES dogs

Augi would be a nice addition to a home that already has a dog or dogs. He is fast, loves to fetch and chase. Right now we walk him 40-60 minute walk each day at Crystal Lake Park, where he regularly sees and meets other dogs. He usually approaches another dog with a respectful puppy crouch. Once he realizes there may be a chance to play, he gets excited, bouncy, and eager to get closer. We have done his intake with Best Friend Doggie Day Care, and he has spent some time there, and is great with the dogs, plays well, so that is a great option to give you some time and Augi some time with his new besties!!

He has had four playdates and two walks with a friends dog. He responded appropriately each time, and played well with a dog that is not into puppy antics, he backs off after a good growl. Just like any puppy, he would benefit from play with an experienced, calm dog, which is why he is signed up at Best Friends Doggie Day Care, he goes for an 2 hours at a time, until he gets a little older.

Great with people

Augi loves people, and is a relatively calm greeter of strangers, he does not bark when people come to our door. He is affectionate with his people and likes brief attention from strangers. He rarely jumps up, although every once in a while his puppy enthusiasm gets the better of him. We had a big dinner party and he greeted everyone calmly, no barking, no jumping, no begging, and he was happy in his kennel with a chew during dinner, and then spending some time with our family playing in the yard.

Balanced activity level

He has a really nice balance of active puppy play and activity and downtime. Right now, he gets a training session in the morning, then a scatter feed breakfast (he waits while I scatter his kibble in the yard), a nap, then about a 40-60-minute walk, then maybe some errands in town, which I make sure we stop somewhere new for him, to give him lots of experience with stores, people, traffic, streets in town, and then I have to get home to start work. He generally sleeps for much of the afternoon. He usually has another play period in the evening with backyard zoomies, fetch, and general puppy silliness, then it’s bed time. He goes to bed early, around 9.

He loves his kennel

Augi loves his kennel. His kennel is a positive place for him. His daytime kennel is in the main part of the house where he can see what is going on, and he often chooses to hang out in it on his own to chew on a special treat or take a nap. We generally have him in his kennel during dinner with a freezebone. At night, he sleeps in a second kennel in our bedroom with the kennel door open. He has only woken me up in the middle of the night when he had giardia, which he is complete with his medication for that.

House-trained

Augi is mostly house trained. It’s been a month since an accident in the house. His cue is to sit by the back door. You have to be alert to where he is and check on him, because he doesn’t bark, he just waits quietly. He very politely pees and poops along the back fence. He also has woken me up during the night twice when he needs to go outside during the giardia episode. But when he’s in for the night, he can go for an 8 hour sleep without peeing. Michael takes him out for a pee at 4:30 am, but often he doesn’t really want to wake up and go. Like any puppy, he will still need his routines reinforced.

Leaving him on his own.

Because I work from home, he hasn’t had much experience being left for long periods. So far, he has been alone for 3 hours in his kennel. You can easily continue building that skill. The fact that he already feels secure in his kennel gives him a very good foundation for learning to be comfortable alone for longer stretches. He is also great in the car alone for 60 minutes. He is great in the car in general.

Children

He has not had enough experience with children to say confidently how he would do living with them. He has met our neighborhood kids, and they have said hello and petted him, he was very calm, but that’s only one data point. He is still very young and very teachable, so we would consider a home with older children if it felt like the right fit. We would want the family to be committed to short introductions, initially lots of supervision, and helping both Augi and the children learn good boundaries with one another.

Cats

We don’t know. He would need a slow introduction and be supervised closely while everyone gets acquainted. He’s not even seen a cat yet. Same for chickens.

Star Puppy

Augi is a star puppy, but he’s still only 6 months old and will soon be entering adolescence. We’ve invested in his training, and he responds really well. He’s extremely bright, learns quickly, and genuinely seems to enjoy learning. We are looking for someone who will continue:

• Kind, Calm and Consistent training

• Positive socialization and good manners around people and dogs (highly recommend Best Friends Doggie Day Care in southtown Corvallis for puppy class and day care, which he has just had his intake session completed).

• Gradually building his comfort with being alone

• Daily exercise, PLAY and adventures, he loves to play.

• Plenty of companionship and involvement in family life

We are requesting a fee of $240.

Augi will come with a kennel, a kennel mattress, a bag of food, a bag of toys, (he is up-to-date on all shots including bordatella and canine influenza) up to date on flea and tick meds. When we adopted Augi they said he is a Labrador mix, which makes sense when you look at him. We doing a DNA test we’ll see what else is in his makeup.
